Foundations

The operational layer: the cross-channel practices that run a lifecycle programme well. Read these alongside the principles, which set the stances these operations serve, and the channels, which carry the channel-specific delivery mechanics.

Most of what follows is cross-channel: how you hold and unify customer data, map the lifecycle, capture permission, build and segment the audience, write and design the message, automate the journey, structure offers and loyalty, plan the calendar, orchestrate across channels, choose the stack, and reason about AI personalisation. Email’s authentication and deliverability sit here too, as the most developed channel-specific operations in the bundle. The per-channel overviews live in channels.

Data and audience

  • Customer data and identity - first-party data, the single customer view, identity resolution, and the CDP/CRM/warehouse split.
  • Segmentation and data - dynamic versus static segments, overlap, data hygiene, personalisation, and merge tags.
  • Segmentation models - RFM, value and lifetime-value tiers, behavioural, demographic, lifecycle-stage, and propensity.
  • Audience sync - activating CRM segments as ad-platform audiences for targeting and, more valuably, suppression, and why it extends the owned channels rather than being one.

Plan the lifecycle

  • Lifecycle mapping - the acquisition, onboarding, engagement, retention, and winback stages, and mapping the journey between them.
  • Consent and preferences - permission that holds across channels, the preference centre as a retention tool, and suppression.
  • List building - forms, placement, lead magnets, single versus double opt in, and source tracking.
  • Database health and sunsetting - the list as a decaying asset, the contact lifecycle from active to sunset, and net growth as acquisition minus decay.

Create and orchestrate

Email delivery mechanics

  • Authentication - SPF, DKIM, DMARC, BIMI, one-click unsubscribe, and the bulk sender requirements.
  • Deliverability - how placement works, spam recovery, IP warming, the metrics reference, and the Promotions tab.
